Evidence Based Professionals
There is an important national movement toward "Evidence-Based Treatments" (EBT) for children and adolescents who have experienced abuse. The term "evidence-based" indicates that a particular treatment has been studied scientifically and shown its benefit: that is to say, a child's emotional and behavioral functioning improves in a measurable way beyond what would be expected without the treatment, or with a less beneficial treatment.
When caregivers or agencies are arranging for a child to receive abuse-related therapy, they should look for providers who are familiar with and trained in EBTs to ensure that "best practices" are incorporated. There is no such thing as a "one size fits all" treatment. The impact of child abuse on individual victims varies widely, and good practitioners use their education, training, experience and clinical judgment to formulate individualized treatment plans for children and families. With that being said, there are three EBTs that are widely accepted. They are:
- Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
- Abuse Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT)
- Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

The SCNCAC provides this directory to assist the public and brokers of mental health services in identifying providers who may be appropriate resources. The SCNCAC is not a licensing board or credentialing agency.
