All Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) in South Carolina offer services as part of their Primary CAC Program that are provided in a safe child-focused environment at the CAC. At the CAC, the child tells what happened to them once to a trained interviewer who knows the right questions to ask in a way that does not not retraumatize the child. Then, a team that includes medical professionals, law enforcement, mental health, prosecution, child protective services, victim advocacy, and other professionals make decisions together about how to help the child based on the interview. Some of the services provided to children and caregivers as part of the Primary CAC Program are listed below.

  • Forensic Interviews
  • Evidence-Based Mental Health Services
  • Forensic Medical Exams
  • Family/Victim Advocacy
  • Community Outreach & Education
  • Information & Referral Services
  • Internet Crimes Against Children Services
  • Parenting Services
  • Spiritual Care Services
  • Support Groups
  • Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) Forensic Interviews

The Primary CAC program and all services are provided as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) response which is a core part of the work of all South Carolina CACs. Some Primary CACs operate Satellite CACs in counties served outside of the primary county and these satellite CACs are identified on the SCNCAC CAC service map. You may use the video player above to view a short video on the CAC response to child abuse. In addition to the Primary CAC Program and services detailed above, many CACs in South Carolina offer Specialized CAC Programs to meet the needs of children and families across South Carolina which are detailed below.

Safe Babies Court Program

The ZERO TO THREE Safe Babies Court Team™ approach transforms child welfare into the practice of child “well-being” by using the science of early childhood development. The program connects babies and their families with the support and services they need to promote healthy child development, while at the same time ensuring speedier exits from the system and faster permanency. There are a number of Children’s Advocacy Centers in South Carolina that have a Safe Babies Court Program as a part of the overall CAC response in the CACs coverage area.

CSEC Case Coordination Program

The effective coordination of cases involving the Criminal Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) or human trafficking can require a different approach by Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) due to the complexity of these types of cases. SCNCAC has provided training to CACs on how to respond when they receive an intake for youth who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking. Many CACs in South Carolina have a CSEC Case Coordination program to assist multidisciplinary team partners with these difficult cases.

Child Abuse Prevention Program

During April of each year SCNCAC and CACs in South Carolina participate in Child Abuse Prevention Month activities through social media and public awareness events. Since a key component of preventing and responding to child abuse is education, many South Carolina CACs have child abuse prevention programs that offer training opportunities and public awareness events. These prevention programs provide local organizations and communities with tools designed to aid in the local prevention of child abuse and preparation to know how to respond when abuse occurs. PSB-CBT Program

Problematic Sexual Behavior – Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy™ (PSB-CBT™) is a comprehensive family-based clinical treatment intervention for children and adolescents with problematic sexual behaviors. The PSB-CBT™ models were developed and tested at the Center on Child Abuse and Neglect at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. SCNCAC has worked with Project BEST to provide training and support for this model at a number of CACs in South Carolina. A number of CACs are offering the PSB-CBT model and SCNCAC continues to work with stakeholders and CACs to increase the capacity of the model across the state.

All CACs in South Carolina have a Primary CAC Program with many of the services listed above. Some of the CACs in South Carolina also offer the specialized services listed above.
